The Secret of Writings Books: Part 3

Tonight’s entry is going to be a short one since I’ve covered character development in previous entries. Character sketches are typically something that I work on while I am creating my plot outlines and working on the rough draft of the novel. The more details you know about your characters the better.

Don’t forget: if you’ve got any particular questions for me, feel free to leave them in the comments field.

In other random good news, it’s Wednesday and I received yet another phone call from my editor today. Not only did Nightwalker stay on the New York Times extended bestseller list for a third consecutive week, but it moved up from #32 to #31. Yeah, Baby! The celebration rolls on.

sorry about the lack of caps in this comment. my baby literally tore my left shift key off and i have a hard time typing using my right one.

congrats on the bump up! it is just going to get higher and higher as the word of mouth spreads.

i had a quick question about your writing... how do you save your work? i am in the middle of my first chapter and i can't figure out if i want to keep it in one long document or several smaller ones based on scenes.

That's really great about the bestseller list! Congrats!

And thanks for the character links.

Chrys, advantages to keeping your book in one document include being able to easily print the entire document, auto-page-numbering, and searching/replacing text. Also, I believe most electronic submissions want a single file.

Well, I normally keep one huge document so I can easily tell what my page count/word count is, and of course I'll submit it that way, but I do lots of work on scenes simultaneously so I save in smaller portions without having to worry about scrolling through the huge document as I jump from one portion to another to do detailed work.

I've also experienced a few disasters (usually relating to my little one) where huge chunks of text from my larger document gets wiped out of existence so it helps to have the smaller portions. It's something my professor taught me to do in college, but I guess that's not the norm.

I'd suggest regular backups for that. And I'm just one voice in the crowd. It really comes down to what works best for you. :)

Hi! Congratulations on the bestseller list. As far as I'm concerned, you should be number one! I just finished Nightwalker last night and it was absolutely amazing! The best I've read in a really long time. I was never bored, the characters were so fleshy, and by the end I was completely exhausted. I'm so excited for the next book and I really like reading your blog too! This "Secrets" series you've been posting is really motivating. ;)
